Hmm, I think my favourites would include Bird Box, because it really, really scared me and gave me several nights of bad dreams, even though the ending is a bit 'meh'. And Haterz by James Goss, which is fascinating sick fun.

I haven't read Haterz, but loved Bird Box, although I think of it as a 2014 novel because that's when it first came out. I see the paperback emerged this year, though! Great, unnerving book.

This probably definitely fell under your radar as it other worldly scifi but you really should give Zero World by Jason M. Hough (Titan Books) a go. As well as some other planet space bits it also manages to read like a Cold War spy novel. Very gripping, quite clever, and bloody enjoyable.
